Complemented by spacious parking lots, the venue offered convenience and accessibility to everyone attending the matches. The collaboration between L&T Construction and dedicated workers from across the nation ensured the swift but precise construction of this iconic venue, setting the stage for the historic inaugural match of the World Cup 2023 between India and Spain. 
In response to the FIH’s mandate for dual host cities, the Odisha government, in a visionary move, sanctioned the development of a new hockey stadium in Rourkela, a decision that heralded the birth of another architectural gem dedicated to the love of hockey. 
At the heart of this endeavor was an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. The meticulous planning incorporated special provisions for handicapped seating, ensuring that every spectator could engage in the excitement of the sport. 
The stadium wasn’t merely a sporting arena; it was a carefully crafted space offering a suite of amenities to cater to players’ needs and provide a comfortable environment for the global contingent of athletes and support staff. 

Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium

The Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on January 5, 2023, set the stage for the World Cup 2023’s inaugural match between India and Spain on January 13. 

Responding to the FIH’s requirement for dual host cities, Odisha’s Chief Minister sanctioned a new hockey stadium in Rourkela in February 2021, sparking the birth of another architectural marvel dedicated to hockey. 

The construction of the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium was a monumental undertaking led by L&T Construction, involving over a thousand workers from across the country. This collaborative effort showcased unparalleled craftsmanship and engineering finesse, ensuring a swift yet meticulous creation of this iconic sporting venue. 

In line with L&T Construction’s commitment to inclusivity, the stadium was meticulously designed with special provisions for handicapped seating, ensuring that all spectators, regardless of ability, could actively participate in the thrill of the sport. The facility boasted a fully-equipped dressing room, sauna, practice pitch, fitness center, and a swimming pool, further enhancing the overall experience for players and spectators alike. 

Strategically positioned around the complex, 225 rooms provided comprehensive accommodation for the global contingent of players and support staff. This thoughtful arrangement ensured comfort, convenience, and a conducive environment for the athletes’ preparation and recovery during the tournament.  

The stadium’s architectural design, overseen by L&T Construction, included two tiers accommodating a fervent crowd of 20,000 spectators. The thoughtful layout and design elements aimed at optimizing the spectator experience, ensuring unobstructed views and comfortable seating. Additionally, six spacious parking lots within a 100-meter radius provided convenient access for visitors attending the matches, further enhancing the overall accessibility of the venue. 

Rourkela underwent a remarkable transformation under the guidance of L&T Construction and the local municipality. Restoration and beautification projects adorned the city, creating a welcoming atmosphere and leaving an indelible impression on global guests arriving for the World Cup.
